Shelter Medical Manager - Veterinary Technician Supervisor (Full-Time)

Reports To: Director of Veterinary Medicine

FLSA Status: Exempt, Salaried

Pay Rate: $65,000 Annually

Summary

The Shelter Medical Manager is responsible for managing the Shelter Medical department including scheduling, hiring, training, and performance management of shelter veterinary technicians and foster veterinary technicians; maintaining administrative duties of the department; and ensuring medical flow for pets within the shelter and in foster homes. This position is responsible for achieving League goals and meeting financial responsibilities.

Essential Duties and Responsibilities include the following. Other duties may be assigned.

Responsible for recruitment, interviewing, and hiring of candidates for employment, as well as

Staff and volunteer management

  • Supervises shelter veterinary technicians and foster veterinary technicians, maintains staff scheduling.
  • Provides training to shelter veterinary technicians and foster veterinary technicians upon hire and ongoing throughout employment.
  • Ensures policies in medical services manuals/SOP are followed and updated as needed.
  • Responsible for recruitment, interviewing, and hiring of candidates for employment.
  • Responsible for placement, training, oversight and performance management of volunteers.
  • In partnership with Facilities Manager oversees all compliance programs (e.g., hazardous materials and waste program, emergency management program, medical equipment management program, infection and control).
  • Responsible for performance management of direct reports including performance improvement plans as needed.
  • Makes salary recommendations for direct reports based upon performance reviews.
  • Handles personnel issues, disciplinary action, and employment termination conversations.
  • Conducts positive and constructive meetings with direct reports.
  • Conducts coaching and mentoring sessions as needed.
  • Makes self available to address needs of staff.
  • Creates and maintains a workplace conducive to high employee morale and output, ensuring positive working relationships between clients, doctors, staff in medical department and in other departments, and volunteers.
  • Oversees the set-up and tear-down of special events as needed.

Medical care and population management

  • Ensures proper procedures are in place for animal handling, disease control, and patient care.
  • Maintains daily, weekly, and monthly medical services reports.
  • Helps to ensure efficient movement of animals throughout the shelter, and ultimately, shortened length of stay.
  • Ability to work in a variety of medical areas throughout the shelter: exams, medicine, surgery, dentistry.
  • Ability to work with veterinary technicians in completing daily tasks.
  • Attends and contributes to daily population rounds and medical rounds.

Qualifications

  • Certified Veterinary Technician (CVT) or combined education and/or experience working as a veterinary technician.
  • Experience managing staff preferred.
  • Experience working in an animal shelter environment preferred.
  • Ability to lead and direct veterinary technicians.
  • Ability to work independently and effectively with managers, directors, staff, and volunteers to accomplish daily tasks as well as strategic plans and contribute effectively as part of a team.
  • Compassion for animals, concern for their welfare, and an ability to handle the physical and emotional aspect of work in an animal shelter environment, including euthanasia.
  • Working knowledge of Microsoft Office required.
  • Bilingual preferred.
  • Willing to stay at the shelter during a hurricane or other disaster.
  • Willing to work weekends.

  • While performing the duties of this job, the employee is consistently required to stand, move, and kneel or crouch. In addition, the employee is constantly required to speak, hear, and use hands for grasping, reaching and other operative tasks. The employee is required to stand and sit frequently. The employee will also be required to bend neck and twist body. The employee will be required to consistently lift an animate or stationary object of up to 50 pounds.
